The moment I signed up to twitter, I immediately started getting followers. After a couple of days, I was on to fifty followers. Without doing anything special. Fifty might not sound as much, but keep in mind that they are all followers that are in the business I’m in – Advertising and Blogging. By tomorrow, this fifty will have grown to a hundred.
There are a lot of tools and groups out there that promise you thousands of followers as soon as you register. How does that work? Easy! Just register and gaze upon a list of 1000’s of other people that will follow you back as soon as you follow them! Sounds great doesn’t it!? It doesn’t? Oh… right. Because 90% of these people aren’t interested in what you have to say – or tweet. We have a saying in The Netherlands: I’d rather have one bird in my hand, than ten in the air. Why? because the other ten are useless. Well, that’s the system these websites have build up. Register, and step into a giant community where nobody’s interested of what anybody has to say. Try finding the right connections in this club. That’s like looking for a needle in a haystack. Never going to happen.
The real deal
Yep, you heard it right. I’m going to tell you how to gain followers, that are interested in what YOU have to say. Why? Because they do it too. Mutual interests. People that want to follow you around all the time, because they’re interested of what YOU have to say. Your own TWITTERAZZI!
1. Be witty, inviting and sharp. Don’t bother your public with the shoes you bought or the time you went to bed. Talk about the stuff that matters to you – because that’ll matter to them. If you’re into sports, talk about the football results. Get it? Only then you’ll find the twitterers (wow, try pernouncing that) that you’re looking for.
2. Tweet often. Make sure you Tweet often so you’ll be noticed in the Tweet Timeline. Use Hootsuite’s Hootlet to quickly tweet interesting sites or blogs you’re visiting. If you comment on a post on a blog other than your own: tweet it! It’ll gain you followers AND traffic. Two flies in one *SPLAT!*. September 29 ‘09 - Don’t exaggerate, tweet often, don’t tweet every five minutes – thanks Bunni.
3. Timestamp your tweets. Use Hootsuite to timestamp your tweets, so you can spread your tweets all day like a true Sir Tweet-A-Lot, even when you’re sleeping. Timestamping offers you a chance to be noticed by different people in different timezones. Growing your network to all the corners of the world.
4. Don’t protect your tweets! Obviously…
5. Follow others. Last but not least, a very important step. Follow your followers. What I’ve noticed on Twitter is that nobody’s bigger than the other. We’re all people – or Tweople? If people are interested of you, they’ll follow you. So follow them back, if you’re interested of them. You’ll be surprised about the ideas you can gain from all those people.
29 september ‘09 – I found a website called Tweetfind.com. Here you can submit your twitter site AND your own website to gain more followers. The good thing about Tweetfind is that the Twitterprofiles are divided by category. So you’ll only gain followers of your interest. Good luck!
Other tips are always welcome. So if you have some, leave a comment!
